“That the men of Kansas may repent,

and very soon vote to the women

of the state their citizens right to a voice

in the government . . . "

Susan Brownell Anthony, 1820-1906.  Women's rights activist.  Autograph Quotations Signed twice, Susan B. Anthony, one page, 8¼" x 10¾", on stationery of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, Rochester, New York, December 25, 1897.

Responding to a student's request for a handwritten sentiment for a college autograph album, Anthony writes two:

“That the men of Kansas may repent, and very soon vote to the women of the state their citizen's right to a voice in the government is the hope of yours sincerely . . .

Equality of rights for women is the demand of yours sincerely . . .

She has signed both of the quotations separately, thus providing two autographs on the same page.

These dual quotations were part of a collection of autograph items assembled by students in the Department of Bookkeeping & Penmanship at the State Normal School in Emporia, Kansas, now Emporia State University, in the 1890s.  The students wrote to prominent men and women seeking holographic letters containing a sentiment, reminiscence, or word of advice to be included in albums devoted to handwriting.  Anthony responded with these sentiments, a signed reprint from an article on the status of women, a handwritten cover letter, and a typed letter seeking funds for her cause.  We are offering those other items separately.

This piece has glue stains from prior mounting for more than a century in the album.  The stains are largely confined to the top and left edges of the page, although there are two light stains about one-third of the way down on the page.  The stains affect a few words of the text but are well removed from both of Anthony's signatures.  Otherwise the piece has only one normal horizontal mailing fold, which affects one of the signatures.  Overall it is in very good to fine condition.

Unframed.
