Victoria Mary Augusta Louise Olga Pauline Claudine Agnes, known as Mary of Teck, 1867-1953.  Queen Consort of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Empress of India, 1910-1936.  Autograph Letter Signed, Mary R, two pages (recto and verso), 4¾" x 7½", on personal stationery, Badminton, Gloucestershire, May 10, 1944.  With original envelope addressed in Queen Mary's hand and signed with her initials, MR.

Queen Mary, then the widow of King George V, shows her generosity by sending money to her physician, who struggled with his own illness, to help with his expenses.  She writes, in full:  “As I know you must have had many expenses connected with your illness I hope you will accept the enclosed as from friend to friend—I consider myself lucky to have found such a clever & sympathetic Dr. here, & you have looked after me so well in these past 5 years—so that I am indeed most grateful.  It is nice to hear from Dr. B– that you are progressing well & I am looking forward to seeing you here again before very long—Believe me  /  Yours very sincerely . . . "

Queen Mary has written this letter from Badminton House, a large country house in Gloucestershire and the seat of the seat of the Dukes of Beaufort since the late 1600s.  She spent most of World War II there with her niece, the Duchess of Beaufort, at the request of her son, King George VI, who wanted her to evacuate from London.

This letter has one normal mailing fold and is in very fine condition.  Queen Mary's wax seal is intact on the accompanying envelope, which she has hand addressed and initialed in the lower left corner, MR, providing in a sense a second autograph.  The envelope is torn and a little soiled and is in fine condition.

Unframed.
