Anna Mary Robertson Moses, 1860-1961.  American folk artist.  Moses' autobiography signed and dated, Grand Ma Moses, / May 31, 1952.

This is a copy of Grandma Moses' autobiography Grandma Moses: My Life's History published by Harper & Brothers in 1952.  Moses has signed and dated the book on the half title page.

Grandma Moses began her painting career at age 75 because arthritis in her hands kept her from working with embroidery.  In 1938, a New York art collector discovered her works for sale in a local drug store, where she had placed them in an effort to earn money during the Great Depression.  The next year, three of her paintings were included in an exhibition of works by "Contemporary Unknown American Painters" at the New York Museum of Modern Art, but she did not remain unknown for long.  By 1940, she had three solo exhibitions in New York and Washington, D.C. Her early primitive style, painting realistic but complex scenes of rural life on pieces of wood, eventually became the immediately recognizable signature folk style by which her work is known worldwide.  By the time of her death at age 101, she accomplished some 1,600 paintings.

This book contains color illustrations of a number of Moses' paintings.  It also contains reproductions of some of her handwritten letters.

Moses has signed the book and dated it in black ink.  The book binding is tight.  The corners of the cover are worn, and a previous owner's name and address are written on the flyleaf, not affecting the page that Grandma Moses has signed.  The dust cover accompanies the book, but it is tattered and is in poor condition.  The book itself is in very good to fine condition, and the autograph is excellent.
