Queen Mary of Teck

Consort of King George V

Beautiful Vandyk portrait of the consort of King George V,

the mother of two British kings and the grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II

Victoria Mary Augusta Louise Olga Pauline Claudine Agnes, known as Mary of Teck, 1867–1953.  Queen Consort of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Empress of India, 1910–1936.  Framed vintage portrait by Vandyk of London, boldly signed Mary R and dated by Queen Mary 1930.

This is a beautiful 6" x 7½" portrait of Queen Mary by Vandyk of London.  Queen Mary has signed and dated it in fountain pen at the lower right, and Vandyk of London has signed it with an original pencil signature in the lower left corner.  The signature is a bit brown, but overall the portrait is in fine to very fine condition.

Of German descent but born and raised in England, Queen Mary was the great-granddaughter of King George III and  the mother of two British kings.  Her oldest son, Edward, known to the family as “David,” acceded the throne as King Edward VIII upon his father's death in January 1936 but abdicated the following December to marry an American divorcée, Wallis Warfield Simpson.  He left the throne to his younger brother Albert, who became King George VI. Queen Mary lived to see George VI die in early 1952, although she herself died before her granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II, was crowned.

This portrait has been regally double matted in marine blue and garnet suede with an inlaid champagne-silver wood fillet.  The mats are layered to give the piece a lovely three-dimensional appearance.  The piece is finished with an engraved silver tone identification plate and is conservation framed in an ornate champagne-silver wood frame to an overall size of 14" x 17".
