Rutherford Birchard Hayes, 1822-1893. 19th President of the United States. Autograph Letter Signed, R. B. Hayes, one page, 4½" x 7", with integral leaf attached, on stationery of the Executive Mansion, Washington, [D.C.], January 20, 1880. Hayes writes to General Francis A. Walker, who headed the Census Bureau, with apparent reference to civil service appointments, still largely political, in the bureau. In full: “I have a few cases of complaint as to the [illegible] nominations which perhaps deserve consideration. / 1. Indiana nominations of the two Democrats Johnson and Seymour / 2. As to Chestnut in Illinois / 3. In Alabama / If convenient for you I can talk it over tonight 8 or 9 o'clock." Hayes has marked the letter “Private." The letter has one horizontal fold, barely touching a line of the text, and mounting traces on the back of the integral leaf. There is a very faint offsetting of ink from another letter, which appears darker in the scan above than it does on the actual letter, on which it is barely noticeable. The letter is in fine to very fine condition. Unframed.
