The incident related in your letter is a most moving and a wonderful tribute to my husband's memory."

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, 1884-1962.  First Lady, 1933-1945.  Typed Letter Signed, Eleanor Roosevelt, one page, 6" x 7", on personal stationery, New York City, New York, August 19, 1961.  With original envelope.

Mrs. Roosevelt sends effusive thanks to a correspondent who wrote her of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.  In full: "It was most kind of you to write to me and I would like to thank you cordially for your nice letter.  The incident related in your letter is a most moving and a wonderful tribute to my husband's memory.  I appreciate your thought of me and remain with all good wishes,  /  very sincerely yours . . . .

This is a very nice letter with great association, given its reference to President Roosevelt, whose name Mrs. Roosevelt still retained on her stationery more than 16 years after his death, at age 63, on April 12, 1945.  In many ways, Mrs. Roosevelt, the longest-serving and arguably the most active and influential First Lady in American history, was President Rooseveltʼs eyes and ears as she traveled the country throughout the Great Depression of the 1930s and later through both the United States and the South Pacific during World War II.  FDR's successor, President Harry S. Truman, recognized the value of Mrs. Rooseveltʼs influence and named her as a charter member of the United States delegation to the United Nations.  She remained influential, and the public held her in high esteem, to her death.  Four presidents—Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson—attended her funeral in 1962.

This letter is perfect for framing.  Mrs. Roosevelt has signed it with a bold blue fountain pen signature.  The letter has one horizontal fold, which does not affect the signature, and shows a bit of handling.  The accompanying envelope bears Mrs. Roosevelt's stamped free frank, “Anna Eleanor Roosevelt,” and bears a New York postmark on the front and a postmark from Emporia, Kansas, on the back, along with pencil changes to the address in another hand.  Both pieces are in fine condition.
