"I lost the bet.  The Devil knows how a P&O boat came to be named ʻMaloya.'

Carl Gustav Jung, 1875-1961.  Swiss psychiatrist; founder of Analytical Psychology.  Typed Letter Signed, C. G. Jung, one page, 8¼" x 11½", on personal stationery, Küsnacht-Zürich, [Switzerland], October 24, 1938.  In German, with translation.

Jung returns a book to a friend and acknowledges losing a friendly wager.  In full, he writes:  "Accept my thanks for kindly sending the booklet from Alexej Remisow.  My wife also thanks you for it.  I return it to you herewith.  The numbers of the photographs are E 34 and E 35.  /  I lost the bet.  The Devil knows how a P&O boat came to be named ʻMaloya.'  I have credited you Fr. 5.- since I do not know whether you are still in Zurich.  Otherwise I would have gladly sent you the Feuflieber [dialectic; a “Fünflieber,”  a Swiss 5 Franc coin] wrapped in cotton wool.  If you are still here, please let me know.  /  You have in no way prevented me from work.  I was happy about our conversation and hope that we will have the pleasure of being able to see you again on another occasion, when you are in Switzerland again.  /  With best regards  /  Your always devoted . . . .

Jung was one of the most influential psychiatrists of the 20th Century.  He pioneered many psychological concepts, including the Archetype, the Collective Unconscious, and the Complex, and he is considered to be the first modern analyst to hold that the human psyche is "by nature religious" and to explore it in depth.  His collected writings comprise 19 volumes.  His best known works are Psychology of the Unconscious (1912) and Psychological Types (1921).

Jung's black fountain pen signature on this letter is absolutely outstanding.  The letter itself shows a bit of handling, not as apparent in hand as the scan below suggests, and has one vertical and one horizontal mailing fold, not touching the signature.  It is in fine to very fine condition.
