John Edgar Hoover, 18951972.  Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, 19241972.  Vintage photograph signed J. Edgar Hoover.

This is a vintage photograph of the powerful FBI director.  It comes from a collection that was assembled in the mid- to late 1940s and has not been on the market for around 70 years.

The photograph is 4" x 6" with a 2½" x 3¼" image of Hoover.  He has signed in black fountain pen directly beneath the image.

On May 10, 1924, then-Attorney General Harlan Fiske Stone appointed Hoover to be Acting Director of the Bureau of Investigation amid allegations that his predecessor was involved in the scandals of the Harding Administration.  By the end of the year, President Calvin Coolidge had made him Director.  Hoover stayed for 48 years and established the modern FBI, which the bureau was renamed in 1935.  Under Hoover its powers were greatly expanded, and it became preeminent in domestic surveillance.

This photograph is virtually pristine.  There is a bit of silvering to the image that is not apparent unless the photograph is turned just right in the light.  Overall the photo is in fine to very fine condition.
