Bold signature of The Tramp on his personal imprinted calling card

Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, a/k/a Charlie Chaplin, 1889–1977.  English comic actor and filmmaker.  Bold sentiment and signature, Faithfully / Chas Chaplin, on the back of Chaplinʼs calling card.

This is a magnificently bold signature of Chaplin in black fountain pen.  He has penned the sentiment and signature on the back of his personal 1¾" x 3¼" calling card, which is imprinted "Mr. Charles Spencer Chaplin" on the front.  It appears that the calling card could be removed from the heavy cardstock backing to which it is tipped with little to no damage to the imprinted name on the front side of the card. The backing measures 5" x 8", and an oval magazine portrait of a youthful Chaplin is tipped it above the signature.

Chaplin, who personified "The Tramp" in silent films, is one of the most important figures of the motion picture industry.  Born in England, Chaplin moved to the United States at age 19.  He first appeared on film in Making A Living in 1914.  His Tramp persona won him thousands of fans, and by 1918 he was a worldwide phenomenon.  He co-founded United Artists in 1919 and, two years later, produced his first feature-length film, The Kid.  He continued to produce silent films after sound came to the screen in 1927, releasing City Lights in 1931 and Modern Times in 1936.  His films The Gold Rush (1925), City Lights, Modern Times, and The Great Dictator (1940), his satire of Adolf Hitler, rank among the greatest films of all time.

This card shows a bit of soiling and a faint paper clip impression that touches two letters of the signature.  Overall it is in fine condition.  The backing card has a horizontal fold, which also runs through the portrait, scattered crinkles, and an old dealer pencil notation next to the signed card.

Unframed.
