Field sends verses to a friend for use as a recitation

Eugene Field, Sr., 18501895.  American poet and essayist.  Autograph Letter Signed, Eugene Field, one page, 5½" x 4¾", on stationery of the Chicago Daily News, Chicago, [Illinois], December 30, 1884.

Field sends a friend "verses" from the newspaper for use in a recitation.  He writes, in full:  It has occurred to me that the inclosed [sic] verses, which appeared in The Daily News of today, might serve you for a recitation.  Many thanks for your pleasant telegram and hereʼs wishing you and yours long life and a superabundance of happiness; in hich wish I am joined most cordially by y family.  /  Hastily, but truly yours . . . .

After stints at five other newspapers in St. Louis, Kansas City, and Denver, Field moved to Chicago in 1883 and joined the staff of the Chicago Daily News, for which he wrote a humorous column called Sharps and Flats in the morning edition.  It was as a Daily News writer that he wrote this letter.

Fieldʼs greater fame, however, lay in his poetry, which he began publishing four years earlier.  His poem “Christmas Treasures" appeared in A Little Book of Western Verse (1879).  He subsequently published more than a dozen volumes of poetry, many for children.  Among his best-known works are “Wynken, Blkynken, and Nod" and “The Duel,” better known as “The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat."  His short stories include “The Holy Cross" and “Daniel and the Devil."

This letter is an excellent example of Fieldʼs small, careful script.  He has penned and signed it in dark brown ink.  The letter has horizontal and vertical folds, is slightly irregularly trimmed at the top, and has scattered small holes that barely affect two letters of the text.  It is in fine condition overall.

Unframed.
