Hoover signs a photograph of his Depression Cabinet

Herbert Clark Hoover, 1874-1964.  31st President of the United States, 1929-1933.  Photograph signed, Herbert Hoover.

This is a nice photo of President Hoover with his Cabinet at the depths of the Great Depression.  Hoover has signed at the bottom in black fountain pen.

Pictured are (front row, from left) Secretary of War Patrick J. Hurley, Vice President Charles Curtis, President Hoover, Secretary of State Henry L. Stimson, and Secretary of the Treasury Andrew W. Mellon; and (back row, from left) Secretary of Commerce Robert P. Lamont, Secretary of the Interior Ray Lyman Wilbur, Postmaster General Walter F. Brown, Attorney General William DeWitt Mitchell, Secretary of Agriculture Arthur M. Hyde, Secretary of the Navy Charles Francis Adams, III, and Secretary of Labor William N. Doak.

The photo is by Harris & Ewing, which for years was the official presidential photographer.  The image was taken outside the West Wing of the White House, in approximately the area where the Oval Office now sits.  The Presidentʼs office was originally in the corner directly behind this group when President Theodore Roosevelt built the West Wing in 1902.  In 1909, President William Howard Taft built the first Oval Office, which was located in the middle of the south side of this building.  On Christmas Eve 1929, during the first year of Hooverʼs presidency, the West Wing was substantially damaged by an electrical fire.  Hoover remodeled it and repaired the roof but did not make substantial changes.  The current West Wing dates largely from 1933, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt built the current Oval Office at the southeast corner of the building, so that he could move between the White House residence and his office out of view of the West Wing staff, and added a second story.

Hoover's signature is bold.  The photograph is a lithographed one that apparently has been removed from a magazine or a book.  Part of the printed words identifying the date and the photographer have been trimmed.  The photo is mounted to a backing, which has some pencil notations on the back.  Overall the piece is in fine condition and would be attractive framed.
