Free franked envelope with Mrs. Rooseveltʼs uncommon full signature

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, 18841962.  First Lady, 19331945.  Rare free frank with full signature, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, postmarked New York, New York, October 3, 1957.

Eleanor Roosevelt wrote scores of letters during her lifetime, but this free frank bears a scarce form of her signature.  To our knowledge, she rarely if ever used “Anna Eleanor Roosevelt" apart from her free franks.  Most of her holograph free franks, such as this one, come from the period 1945–1947.  Later she used two different rubber stamps for her franks.

Mrs. Roosevelt has signed her signature in black on a typed line below the cancellation and has written the word “Free" in the upper right corner.  The cancellation affects only the word “Free.”  The envelope has been carefully torn open at the top, with no appreciable paper loss, and has paper clip stains on the back.  Mild toning affects portions of the front and back.  Overall the piece is in fine condition.
