Large signature of Grant signed three months before his death

Ulysses S. Grant, born Hiram Ulysses Grant, 18221885.  18th President of the United States, 18691877.  Bold signature, U. S. Grant, on a card.

Grant signed this signature for a collector some three months before his death.  The brown ink signature, which measures 2⅞" long, is on a 2" x 3½" white card that is tipped to an album page.  The collector "Received / April 26th 1885 / direct" at the top of the album page.  Grant died of throat cancer at Mount McGregor, New York, on June 23, 1885.  He was 63 years old.

This signature has never been offered on the autograph market before.  The late-19th Century autograph album from which it has been removed has been handed down through several generations.

Grantʼs signature is in very fine condition and would be perfect for framing with a portrait or photograph of Grant.  There is a small soiling mark at the bottom edge of the card and a light handling bend, noticeable when the card is turned just right in the light, that affects the “U" in the signature.  For the sake of completeness, we note that there are also a couple of tiny glue stains, which are hardly noticeable, on the edges of the card at the upper corners.  The blue album page has a bit of damp staining at the bottom edge, well removed from the signature card, and is in fine condition.

Unframed.  Please ask us about custom framing this piece.
