Ellsworth authorizes payment to a fellow member of the Connecticut Pay Table

Oliver Ellsworth, 1745–1807.  Drafter of the United States Constitution; 3rd Chief Justice of the United States, 1796–1800.  Manuscript Document Signed, O Ellsworth, one page (recto and verso), 7¾" x 8", no place [Hartford, Connecticut], July 28, 1777.

As members of the Committee of the Pay Table, which handled Connecticut's military finances during the Revolutionary War, Ellsworth and John Chenward authorize John Lawrence, Treasurer, to pay Fenn Wadsworth, another member of the Pay Table, ₤22.15s.5p. for "expense of sickness & loss of cloaths" [sic] for "himself & brother."  The receipt on the verso is written and signed by Wadsworth.

Ellsworth has signed with a 2⅛" signature.  The rest of the document is in Chenwardʼs hand.

This document, with its bold ink, would be nice in a framed display.  The document is irregularly trimmed and has three horizontal folds, one of which is split at the ends, affecting the paraph under Chenwardʼs signature but not touching Ellsworthʼs signature.  Because of the fold breaks, which are clean and could easily be mended, the piece is in good condition.  Absent the fold breaks, it would be fine.  It has an outstanding example of Ellsworth's signature.

Unframed.  Please click here for information about custom framing this piece.
