Dark signature and title of the Lincoln appointee to the Supreme Court Samuel Freeman Miller, 1816–1890. Associate Justice, Supreme Court of the United States, 1862–1890. 2½" x 4" black-bordered envelope, boldly signed Sam. F. Miller / Asso. Jus. Sup. Court / U.S. on the front. The envelope has been sealed, and there is a circular remnant of what appears to be part of a wax seal at the tip of the flap on the back. The envelope is slightly toned, and the ink has bled on the “U,” but overall the piece is in fine condition. Unframed. _____________
