Exceptionally rare Executive Mansion card signed by “Lemonade Lucy”

Lucy Ware Webb Hayes, 1831–1889.  First Lady of the United States, 1877–1881.  Extraordinarily rare Executive Mansion card signed Lucy W. Hayes.

Collectors of First Ladies’ autographs should take care not to let this piece pass by.  Lucy Hayes’s autograph is rare in all forms, but her signed Executive Mansion cards are the rarest.  In In his seminal work on First Ladies’ autographs, Walter Ostromecki, Jr., said that, in 20 years of collecting, he knew of only five of these signed cards.  Walter A. Ostromecki, Jr., The First Ladies of the United States:  An Historical Look at Each and Their Autograph Materials, 1789–1989, at 94 (1989). Our search of auction records found only one other that has been sold since 2008.

This 2¾” x 4½” card is imprinted executive mansion, washington. in blue engraved printing at the upper right.  Mrs. Hayes has signed in black fountain pen.  The ink has faded to brown, leaving the signature a little light but still nicely readable.  The card has some light vertical staining, which affects three letters in the signature; a pinhole in the blank area at the top; and mounting traces on the back.  Overall, the card is in fine condition.

The card comes with an authentication certification by psa/dna.  We put no stock in the opinions of third-party authenticators, but we pass the certification along because it accompanied the card when we acquired it.  As does all autograph material that we sell, this card also comes with our own money-back guarantee of authenticity, without time limit, to the original purchaser.

Given the extreme rarity of Mrs. Hayes’s signed Executive Mansion cards, this one would be a star of first magnitude in any First Ladies collection.

Unframed.
