Richard M. Nixon

First edition copy of Nixonʼs book No More Vietnams

Richard Milhous Nixon, 19131994.  37th President of the United States.  First edition hardbound copy of Nixon's sixth book, No More Vietnams, boldly inscribed and signed on the half title page "To Chris Feurstein  /  with best wishes  /  from  /  Richard Nixon.

The Watergate scandal forced Nixon to resign the presidency in 1974.  In the 20 years between his presidency and his death, Nixon wrote nine books, including No More Vietnams, and reestablished himself as a respected statesman.

This book, which was published in 1985, makes for interesting reading in view of the United States' involvement in Iraq following the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.  Nixon maintained a hard-line view while urging the use of economic aid to launch "a peaceful revolution for progress in the Third World."  He wrote:

Americans dont like to play a role on the world stage.  Vietnam eroded our will to do so.  But America is a great nation.  Great nations must be mature enough to accept the fact that you do not win all the time.  Defeat is never fatal unless you give up, and America must never give up.  We must not turn away from our responsibilities in the world.  If we refuse to play a major role, the rest of the free world will be at the mercy of totalitarian aggressors.

      . . . .

Our defeat in Vietnam was only a temporary setback after a series of victories.  It is vital that we learn the right lessons from that defeat.  In Vietnam, we tried and failed in a just cause.  "No more Vietnams" can mean that we will not try again.  It should mean that we will not fail again.

This book is in extremely fine condition.  The binding is tight, and the dust jacket shows only a couple of small wrinkles at the top.  A name has been blacked out at the top of the front flyleaf, and there is some underling on two pages at the back, but otherwise the book is like new.  Nixon's inscription and signature are bold.
