Queen Victoria

The Queen grants permission for a criminal defense lawyer to defend a man

Alexandrina Victoria, 18191901.  Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, 18371901; Empress of India, 18761901.  Excellent condition manuscript document signed, Victoria RI, two pages (recto and verso), 8" x 12½", with integral leaf attached, Court of St. James's, October 15, 1880.

This is an interesting legal document—a license to plead—in which the Queen grants permission for a criminal defense lawyer to defend a man under indictment on a misdemeanor charge.

Queen Victoria has signed with a magnificent 3" signature.  The document bears the Queen's paper and wax seal, the embossed seal of the Secretary of State for the Home Department, and an embossed £0.10s. revenue stamp.  There is minor splitting at two folds on the manuscript leaf and slightly larger splits at the folds on the unused integral leaf, but otherwise there are no noticeable defects.
