Edith Bolling Galt Wilson

Scarce note on a The White House card signed as First Lady

Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, 1872–1961. First Lady of the United States, 1915–1921. Autograph Note Signed, Edith Bolling Wilson, on The White House card.

Mrs. Wilson—who effectively ran the presidency during President Wilson’s recovery from a stroke—sends a note of thanks.  In full:  “With renewed thanks for the pleasure you gave us last Winter.”

According to Lynne E. Keyes and Stephen Koschal in The History of Collecting Executive Mansion, White House, and The White House Cards (2005), anything signed by Edith Wilson as First Lady “can be considered scarce.  On occasion, and with a little luck a collector might be able to acquire ‘The White House’ card signed in full by Mrs. Wilson.”  This card therefore is very desirable.

The card is slightly toned from prior framing but overall is in fine condition.  Mrs. Wilson’s handwriting and signature are bold.

Unframed.
