Dwight David Eisenhower, 18901969.  General of the Army; Supreme Commander, Allied Expeditionary Force, World War II; 34th President of the United States, 19531961.  Rare Typed Letter Signed, Uncle Ike, one page, quarto, on personal stationery, Indio, California, April 4, 1966.  With original envelope.

Eisenhower, spending time in the California desert in retirement, sends birthday greetings to his great niece.  He writes: “Many happy returns of the day.  May only good things be yours in the years ahead.  /  Your Dad and I have had some fine visits here on the Desert.  Of course, we are rarely on the same side of any one argument but we do agree on one thing and that is what a fine daughter he has.  /  With affectionate greetings to your family,  /  Devotedly,  /  Uncle Ike.”

This form of Eisenhower’s signature is rare.  Eisenhower signed “Ike,” “Ike Eisenhower,” and “Ike E.” to intimates, but we had not seen anything signed “Uncle Ike” until we acquired this letter and two others.  Paul K. Carr’s classic UACC Eisenhower signature study, The Eisenhower Files, has no example of this.

After his presidency, Eisenhower lived in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, but spent time in the desert near Palm Springs in southern California, where he enjoyed playing golf.  He spent enough time there that his

The letter is in very fine condition, and Eisenhowers signature is bold.  The letter has normal mailing folds, which do not touch the signature.  The accompanying air mail, special delivery envelope, which bears Eisenhowers printed free frank, has some soiling and bears several postal notations but overall is in fine condition.

Unframed.
