Rutherford Birchard Hayes, 1822–1893. 19th President of the United States, 1877–1881. Executive Mansion card signed, R. B. Hayes.
This is the second variant of Hayes's Executive Mansion cards. Earlier cards had the words EXECUTIVE MANSION, WASHINGTON printed in the upper left. This one, which is the more familiar form, has the words printed in the upper right.
This card is in very fine condition. The lightness of Hayes's signature is typical of his signed Executive Mansion cards. The signature is, though, perfectly centered on the card.
The card has been exquisitely triple matted in dual tones of cattail and bronze suede. It is floated above the background, giving the piece a wonderful three-dimensional effect. It is matted with an inlaid beaded gilt wood fillet, an official engraved portrait of Hayes from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, and an engraved brass identification plate, and it is framed in a beaded gilt wood frame.
