Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1882-1945.  32nd President of the United States, 1933-1945.  Beautiful typewritten Document Signed, Franklin D. Roosevelt, one page, 8" x 10½", on stationery of The White House, Washington, no date [ca. 1943-1944], lauding the killing of "large numbers of German officers and soldiers."

This is an extremely desirable World War II document in which Roosevelt approves the award of the Legion of Merit to a Soviet officer.  Roosevelt praises Lieutenant Colonel Prokofi Mefodievich Sidorchuk's actions against the Nazis:  “In the operations conducted by the troops under Colonel Sidorchuk an artillery battery and 7 tanks were destroyed on 10 May 1943 as a result of intense fighting and heavy casualties inflicted upon German troops.  During later operations from 18 to 25 October 1943 under his command, many bridges and tanks were destroyed and large numbers of German officers and soldiers killed."

The Legion of Merit is an American military decoration that may be awarded to both American and foreign military personnel for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.  Congress authorized the medal in 1942.  Like the Congressional Medal of Honor, it is designed to be worn around the neck.

While President Harry S. Truman signed many of these documents, those signed by Roosevelt are scarce.  This one is in extra fine condition, with a bold, 3½" full blue-gray ink signature that is one of the best that we have seen.  This document has never been folded.  There is a pencil notation in the upper left corner, but it could be matted out if the piece were framed.  For the sake of full disclosure, we note that there is an almost imperceptible paper clip impression by the pencil notation.
