Thurgood Marshall, 1908-1993.  Associate Justice, Supreme Court of the United States, 1967-1991.  Rare signed biography of Marshall, entitled Thurgood Marshall:  Supreme Court Justice.  Marshall has inscribed and signed on the half title page, To: Wanda _____ / All the best" / Thurgood Marshall.

This book has outstanding provenance.  We obtained it from a Supreme Court employee for whom Marshall autographed it.

The book, published in 1990, is from the "Black Americans of Achievement" series published by Chelsea House Publishers.  Its introductory essay is by Coretta Scott King.

As chief counsel for the NAACP, Marshall represented civil rights claimants all over the United States and won 32 of 35 cases before the United States Supreme Court.  Among them were Smith v. Allwright (1940), which declared Texas exclusion of black voters from primary elections unconstitutional; Sweatt v. Painter (1950), which declared "separate but equal" facilities for black professionals and graduate students in state universities unconstitutional; and Brown v. Board of Education (1954), which declared unconstitutional the racial segregation of public schools.

In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Marshall Solicitor General of the United States, a role in which he won 14 of the 19 cases that he argued before the Supreme Court on behalf of the government.  In 1967, Johnson appointed Marshall to the Supreme Court.  Marshall served until his health forced him to retire in 1991.

This book is rare.  We have not found another similar book in auction records over the past 30 years.  Marshall has boldly inscribed and signed the book in black.  The signature is in excellent condition.  The book, which is hardbound, shows some wear on the corners of the cover and minor soiling on the back, but the binding is tight and the pages are clean.
