William McKinley

William McKinley, 1843-1901.  25th President of the United States, 1897-1901.  Partially printed Document Signed, William McKinley Jr., November 1871.

This is a piece removed from a larger document, a grand jury indictment, or a “True Bill,” indicting a man for assault and battery.  McKinley has signed as the prosecuting attorney for Stark County, Ohio, a position that he held 1869-1871 before being elected to Congress.

The document has a few pinholes, none affecting the signature, and most of which could be matted out if the piece were framed.  The upper left corner is also missing, and there is a pencil notation “25th President U.S.” in another hand at the bottom.  There is also a bit of show through of writing on the back in another hand describing the assault being charged.  McKinley has boldly signed in fountain pen with a nice paraph, which he used early in his life.  Fine condition.

Unframed.
