Magnificent signature of Justice Jackson

Howell Edmunds Jackson, 1832–1895.  Associate Justice, Supreme Court of the United States, 1893–1895; United States Senator from Tennessee, 1881–1886.  Signature, Howell E Jackson / Tennessee, dated in his hand, August 1st 1882.

Jackson has signed this beautiful signature as a United States Senator and added his state, Tennessee, and the date in black fountain pen.  The piece, which has been taken from an autograph album, measures 2¾" x 7⅝".

Jackson's autograph material is uncommon.  A native of Tennessee, Jackson, a Democrat, represented the state in the United States Senate for some five years before he was appointed to the bench.  He sat on the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit from 1886 until his appointment as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court by Republican President Benjamin Harrison in 1893.  His tenure on the Supreme Court was cut short by his untimely death from tuberculosis.  He served on the Court only 2 years, 5 months, and 21 days.

This piece is in very fine condition.  There is an old dealer pencil note on the back, identifying Jackson as a Senator from Tennessee.  The left edge is faintly uneven from removal from the album, and the top edge is slightly irregularly trimmed.  Overall the piece is very fine.

Unframed.  Please ask us about custom framing this piece.
