John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, K.G., 1650-1722.  British general; ancestor of British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill.  Manuscript Document Signed, Marlborough, one page, 9½" x 14", February 1, 1702/3.

Marlborough appoints a man to work in "ordinary,” or regular, service to Queen Anne in the Office of Ordnance

Marlborough was an English soldier and statesman whose career spanned the reigns of five monarchs throughout the late 17th and early 18th centuries.  He gained international fame in the War of the Spanish Succession where, on the fields of Blenheim, Ramillies and Oudenarde, his place in history as one of Europe's great generals was assured.  British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill, whose first book was a biography of Marlborough, was his direct descendant.

Note that the document was too large for our scanner.  The top  and side margins are not cut off on the actual document.

Marlborough has signed this document with an impressive 3½" signature.  The paper and wax seal is intact.  The document has three horizontal folds; a 1½" tear repaired with tape on the back, with a small tape stain showing through to the front; a short split in the middle fold at the right edge; and considerable edge chipping with some loss of text on the right.  Overall it is in fair to good condition, and the signature is very fine.

Unframed.
