Richard Milhous Nixon, 1913-1994. 37th President of the United States. Mint condition special Warner Books edition of Nixon's book The Real War, signed Richard Nixon.
This is the first printing of the Warner Books edition of The Real War. This beautiful maroon cloth-covered edition is embossed in silver on the cover and spine and gilded silver on the page edges. The endpapers are imprinted with maps of the eastern and western hemispheres. Nixon has signed it on the limitation page before the half title page.
Nixon's signature is bold and black. Interestingly, beneath his signature are the light imprints of two other Nixon signatures that likely transferred when Nixon was signing other pages for binding into copies of this book. So this book actually bears what could be described as three Nixon signatures, not one.
This book is interesting, but all the more so with the hindsight of 30 years after Nixon wrote it. Nixon decries Soviet expansionism, the push toward Communist domination that Nixon described as World War III. That war, he said, began before World War II ended and had “proceeded from the Soviet seizure of Eastern Europe, through the communist conquest of China, the wars in Korea and Indochina, and the establishment of a western hemisphere outpost of Soviet power in Cuba, to the present thrusts by the Soviet Union and its allies into Africa, the Islamic crescent," in countries such as Afghanistan and Iran, “and Central America." It was, he said, a "total war . . . waged on all levels of life and society,” one that involved, among other things, military and economic power, willpower, and “the strength of a nation's galvanizing ideas and the clarity of its sense of purpose.”
This book is in absolutely mint condition. It comes with the matching slipcase.
